I lay in bed listening to
the loud harsh sound of your snores
like a freight train in my ears
I could not sleep.
You turned over
the bed shook beneath your weight
an earthquake in the night
I could not sleep.
I began to drift toward sleep
you pulled the covers
leaving me exposed and shivering
I could not sleep.
I lay there frustrated by the situation
you move next to me and placed
a heavy arm across my waist
now too hot
I could not sleep.
You went out of town to work
I thought at last a good night
I had the bed to myself
wrapped in the covers
I looked forward to the still silence
but without you
I could not sleep.
